- When using Trumpet, it will tell you that posting is OK when it connects. Your
- host doesn't always give post priveledge. Are you using a commercial or
- corporate access? Give trumpet a try via this tutorial.

- Hello,
-
- I am trying to set up SLIP on my DEC 5000/200 so that my PC which is
- running winsock over SLIP can access it. The following diagram is the
- my setup
-
- |-----| |-----|
- | |---modem--- ... ---modem---| |
- |-----| |-----|
- ccpx12 (DEC wks) tkypc (my PC)
- tel: 7722527 tel: 7726423
-
- Both modem is GVC MNP5 but I use hayes-V in the /etc/sliphosts since that
- is the nearest that I can find in /etc/acucap.
-
- The following is my /etc/sliphosts
-
- #
- # The fields describing each connection are:
- #
- # host destination gateway netmask speed tty modemtype phonenum logininfo
- #
- # Host is used to match the entry in this file.
- #
- # Destination is used an argument to ifconfig
- #
- # Gateway is usually the hostname of the system although it may be
- # changed for specific routing cases.
- #
- # Netmask depends on your network and is passed to
- # /etc/ifconfig. Speed is the speed at which the connection is to be
- # run (this may be "any" for slaves and the speed of the line will
- # not be modified).
- #
- # The device is the line to use for this connection
- # (for masters this is the outgoing line to use and for slave /dev/tty
- # is usually specified).
- #
- # Modemtype is specified as the type of modem
- # to use (name must match an entry in /etc/acucap or "hw" for hardwired
- # connections - Master only).
- #
- # Phonenum is present if modemtype is not "hw"
- # and is the phone number to use (Master only).
- #
- # Logininfo is UUCP like info
- # needed to negotiate the SLIP login at the remote host (Master only).
- #
- # Thus a sample Master might be:
- #
- # decvax decvax.dec.com test.fun netmask 19200 /dev/ttyd0 hayes-V 5-5555 ogin:
- # Stest ssword: guess
- tkypc ccpx12 ccpx12 225.225.225.0 9600 /dev/tty00 hayes-V 9-7726423 ogin:
- tkypc ssword: 1234567
- #
- # (Notice "decvax.dec.com", "test.fun", "netmask" must be found in /etc/hosts,
- # /etc/networks or resolved by a name server as these are passed
- # to /etc/ifconfig).
- #
- #
- # Master dec7 calling (on a hardwired line) slave cyclops:
- #
- #cyclops cyclops dec7.dec.com 255.255.255.0 19200 /dev/tty01 hw
- # "" \r\c ogin: dec7 ssword: dec7
- #
- # What slave cyclops would have in its /etc/sliphosts file to allow the
- # connection. In addition, the dec7 would need to be present in the
- # password file with the shell set to "/usr/new/slattach"
- #
- #dec7 dec7.dec.com cyclops 255.255.255.0 any /dev/tty
- #ccpx12 tkypc 255.255.255.0 any /dev/tty00
- #
- # What Master dec7 calling (on a hayes 9600 baud modem) slave cyclops:
- #
- #cyclops cyclops dec7.dec.com 255.255.255.0 19200 /dev/ttyd0 hayes-V
- #10329 "" \r\c ogin: dec7 ssword: dec7
- ccpx12 tkypc tkypc 255.255.255.0 9600 /dev/tty00 hayes-V 9-7722527 ogin: tkypc
- ssword: 1234567
-
- and this is the login.cmd from Trumpet winsock.
-
- output atz\13
- input 10 OK\n
- output atd 9 W 7722527\13
- #output atd241644\13
- input 30 CONNECT

- output slip\13
- input 30 Your address is
- address 30
- input 30 \n
- display \n
- display Connected. Your IP address is \i.\n
- exec pingw leonis
-
- I reached the stage when the winsock login cmd script reported that I am
- connected to the wks and then the script aborted. As for the wks, the OS
- is Ultrix 4.3a and I recompiled the kernel with sl included. An account
- with the userid "tkypc" and login shell "/usr/new/slattach" has also been
- created.
-
- Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

-
- I can not offer you any direct help, but I can give you a guess. I was
- working on some Winsock code (in a Winsock stack) which needed to
- register a callback function with a VxD. When the VxD made a call through
- a function pointer that was invalid, Windows shut down and went to the
- DOS prompt, as you describe. What I think happened was the Virtual
- Machine Manager (VMM) discovered some sort of problem, and executed a
- "Reactor SCRAM" -type routine which shut down the protected memory
- system, put the original DOS image back into the lower 640K, and dropped
- back to DOS.
-
- This makes sense sine the VMM does not have any user interface (outside
- of the debug version of Windows), and has few alternatives when it
- detects corruption in the VxD system, other than to punt. The reason
- there is no GPF is beacuse VxD use Code and Data Segment selectors which
- cover all of memory (Selectors 28 and 30, respectively), and have no
- restrictions on memory access.
-
- What you need to do is verify the soundness of all you VxD's. This sounds
- bad, and it is. Try getting fresh copies of all the .386 files in your
- Windows\System directory. Try replacing Wollongong with another Winsock
- stack.
-
- I am able to run many of the applications you mentioned without this sort
- of problem, using MS TCP/IP (March beta) Winsock.
